Tomax7’s search engine tips to great positioning.

Ever wonder how some sites rank so high in the big 5 search engines?   Follow my simple rules and you should start seeing results within a couple of weeks.

1. Title Tag –  Can’t emphasis how important the TITLE tag is. This shows up in search engines as the link to your site.  It has to be catchy and no more than 20 words long.  It (the wording) also shows in the title (top bar) of your internet browser.

2. Meta Keyword Tag
– I know many books say don’t use these, but trust me they help. Even if some search engines don’t use the Meta tags (like Yahoo), they do help. Just like point one, use phrases for these.

3. Keyword phrases – don’t use single word keywords, but phrases. Like instead of just ‘trainer’, use ‘computer trainer’ or ‘microsoft trainer’ or ‘calgary trainer’.  Basically what would YOU type in a search engine to find your site? Ask someone to help you come up with wording - sometimes you’d end up with a brain fart if you did it by yourself.

4. Meta Description Tag
– this is the twin sister of the Meta Keywords. Give a short elevator speech on what your site is all about. This shows up in search engine results under the link to your site. Make it catchy.

5. Heading Tags
– Use these (H1, H2, etc) throughout your site. Avoid too many H1’s as they are akin to using capitals letters in emails, or shouting.

6. ALT Tags or Title Tags for images
– These are those little pop up windows you see when you hover your mouse over a picture, or the text that shows up before the picture loads say on a slow modem speed.  They help a lot with placement

7. Link (Anchor)
– link to other pages in your site. All over the place. Link to other sites. Have them link to you. This helps the search engines find more pages on your site and offer more results in the search.

8. Clean Code
– enough said. Free or paid web page programs puts a lot of excessive coding into a website that is ignored by search engines and makes it a pain to update. Nothing beats knowing HTML.

9. Flash
– this program has its place and can be skillfully used, but don’t use it as the whole web page. Chances are your site will be totally missed by a search engine.

10. Submit your site -
once a month to the main search engines.

AND DO NOT...

1. Use your keywords over and over again on your page.

2. Use ghosting script, or have your keywords as the same colour as the background.

3. Do not subscribe to those emails where they will submit your website to 300,000 engines for free.

Do these things and you'll get spammed out by the search engine spiders faster than you can think.
