Maria was
delighted when FANDIC
presented her with a new chair to replace the one in
this picture. The old chair was rusting and falling apart. The front wheels
had not turned in years.
The new chair was one of dozens
that CAPD shipped from Canada to Maria's community. At last, she could
wheel through her home instead of being forced to stay in one spot.
Like many other seniors
with disabilities in developing countries, Maria lives in virtual isolation.
There are no sidewalks outside her door, and the roads are very poor.
Maria cannot travel beyond her door. She has no access to transportation,
and cannot hope for employment. She depends entirely on her family.
